A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.” The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude. “She rolled her eyes and said, “You must be an Obama Democrat.” “I am,” replied the man. “How did you know?” “Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help to me.” The man smiled and responded, “You must be a Republican.” “I am,” replied the balloonist. “How did you know?” “Well,” said the man, “you don’t know where you are or where you are going. You’ve risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You’re in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it’s my fault.”

I think it’s interesting how unscientific some beliefs of how the worlds works seems. Most notably that everything has a reason, and everything is fair. Take, for example, belief that heaven exists, and it is where you are going after you die. Almost everyone has an idea (religious or not) that their consciousness plus their memories will be somehow retained in a non-corporeal state after they die (ghosts, spirits, heaven, and so on). But where does this idea come from? This idea of ‘heaven’ or ‘the afterlife’? I’d wager it comes from both the fear of the inevitability of death, as well as the idea that the world would be just too barbaric to give us this freedom of consciousness and a soul just to have everything we are erased. But, hey, it is more likely that this is in fact the case.
The ultimate silver lining seems to be religion. The idea that god is looking out for you, and everything is done to his design. From religion stems ideas like ‘it was god will that you got pregnant’, and ‘it was gods will a particular person died’, and ‘god grants you life after death.’ Sounds great, doesn’t it? But is this all just a way for us to make ourselves feel better about ourselves?
What if there is no god. What if nothing is looking out for you. What if this is all there is. What if the world is in fact a cruel and horrible place. What if you aren’t given a fair chance in the world. What if you don’t even have free will – that life is pre-determined. I’d say all the signs point to the world being all of these things. It’s just to barbaric to take seriously without getting very depressed.
I’ve seen lots of things that make me doubt the solidarity of people. Almost everyone I know (save my parents, their parents, and the chenoweths) have cheated at some point in their relationships. I didn’t think it was possible. I’ve grown to accept that maybe people are weak and liars, and maybe the reality of it all is it is silly to assume in todays world people will not cheat.
I’ve seen plenty of evidence that a strong and good personality is not what attracts a mate – attraction is purely animalistic, determined 90% by the bodies perception of health and stability of your mate. Anyone who thinks people aren’t and can’t be shallow is the person at the receiving end of this reality.
I’m almost certain nobody is looking out for you, and everything is simply a logical and linear reaction based on environment.
I’m going to take advantage of seeing reality for what it is, rather than believing it is something it is not. I’m going to take responsibility for my life, and I am going to work out until I look gorgeous (already down 22 pounds since march!).
Life is cruel. That’s just the way it is!

The Starcraft II beta closed a few days ago. I miss the game. I’m going to be thoroughly addicted when it comes out.
However, of the three races, the insect like assimilating Zerg don’t seem very interesting. They pump out plain units, and that is pretty much what they do. As opposed to the super cool new units on the other teams, the Zerg are boring.
So how do we make Zerg more fun without giving them unfair advantages? We need to work off of the lore of the Zerg being focused on ridiculous biology, including mutations and environment manipulation.
I propose the following abilities:
- Infestors can create ramps or continuously reinforced physical barriers. The ramps would be made of creep.
- Infestors need a sentry ward like ability
- Infested terrans should have a psychic attack to match zerg lore
- Zerglings can cliffwalk after a lair level upgrade.
- Mutalisks can reinforce their army in the field and self heal. “Mitosis” would cost the same as purchasing an additional mutalisk, but would split the original mutalisk in two (after a period of incapacitation)
- Hatcheries could spawn queens rather than birth queens anywhere on the creep (similar to protoss gateway warp)
- Units under the effect of corruption should spawn scourge upon death (broodlings of the air – no longer suicide units)
I think this wouldn’t change things too much, except give zerg some much needed mass cliffwalking (proper defenses will cream any zerg force right now).

This is my blog, and I write what I want too. I fully realize this post has no audience that reads it. But here goes, some minor geek complains I have lately:
Doctor Who “The Time of Angels”: In earlier season 3 episode “Blink” it was established that the reason the stone angel statues were “Weeping Angels” was because they covered their eyes so they wouldn’t see eachother and therefore cause eachother to freeze into statues. In the new “Time of Angels” episodes, there is enough Angels which are clearly making a provakative agressive stance eyes uncovered it stands to reason all of them would be frozen. Now, I understand rewriting facts or changing rules for the sake of plot (which doctor who does frequently by being ambiguous with what rules the doctor has to follow considering he has a time machine for the sake of not ruining plot with deus ex machina) but for real, if an aspect of a character is so important it is in their name (WEEPING Angels) then you better honor it every episode the character shows up.
Starcraft 2 Beta: Zerg was my favorite race because it was most insidious and fun to play in Starcraft 1. In the 2 beta, it is alot of fun, but the spellcasters are way too odd. For one, spawning Infested Terrans is weird lorewise if they have machine guns. As the Zerg are purely biological, and humans are clearly an inferior species, the only reason the Zerg had interest in humans was their Psychic potential. You would think infested Terrans would have some kind of Psychic attack or skill, rather than being spawned with machine guns (where did the machine guns get grown from anyway?) Further, Zerg’s spellcaster “the Infestor” is stupid – the early design for it was it could from under ground either cast a poison spell on enemies, or ‘infest’ buildings. It now does neither. All it can do is a crappy mind control like spell, and a movement dampening spell (woopie do) and it also can’t do it from underground. So where does its name come from? What is it infesting? What is it even good for? I ask because I really like tactical spells in RTS games, like spawn broodlings in SC1. Maybe overseers should do that…

C: ey question for you and you don’t have to answer it. Do you have hope for things?
B: in what way?
C: Like do you believe in the concept of hope
B: i have faith i will continuously progress in some way (not necessarily positive) but i will keep moving
B: i try not to get hung up on hoping a particular thing will happen, even as abstract as things will get better
B: all i believe in is things will go on
B: and more opportunities will continuously arise
B: but, i take a very scientific approach to the world, at the expense of my own sanity and joy
B: its easy to be positive believing everything is done for a reason and you will go to heaven when you die
B: what i do know is we are damn lucky to be in the situation we are in at all
B: (alive, more or less free to live life leisurely)
B: and i know one day i will die and i believe sofar as i know i will forget everything about my life at that point the same way i don’t recall life while asleep or recall a night of intoxication while awake
B: which is horrifying. i also believe everything that happens is the result of chain reactions and free will is a convenient illusion
B: which is doubly horrifying
B: but this gives me the clarity to see i should experience life now
B: and do the best i can at being whatever i can be
B: also, as a consolation
B: you will always be exactly who you are right now at this time
B: i don’t believe after you stop experiencing something it stops existing
B: sure, you yourself cant experience it again
B: but it becomes a fixed point in history
B: i imagine the world as a giant wooden board that you are cutting a line in
B: even if you can only see where the blade meets the board
B: the board will always have your cut in it
B: you’re now immortalized in time right now just by virtue of existing
B: you 1 year ago is still happening
B: right now (well, not now, 1 year ago) but its happening
B: and will always happen
